[edit]From Byzantine Greek κρομμύδιν (krommúdin), from Koine Greek κρομμύδιον (krommúdion), the diminutive of Ancient Greek κρόμμυον (krómmuon). Cognate with Greek κρεμμύδι (kremmýdi).
