Etymology

Perhaps a contraction of κέαρ (kéar), related to καρδία (kardía). From Proto-Indo-European *ḱḗr. Liddell and Scott (1940) suggest that κέαρ may have been a back-formation to κῆρ on the basis of ἦρ (êr)~ἔαρ (éar, “spring”)
