Ancient Greek

Etymology

Maybe from Proto-Indo-European *h₂welh₁- (hair, wool), like Latin vellus (fleece), or from the same root of Ancient Greek εὔληρα (eúlēra, rein), Latin lōrum (thong) and Old Armenian լար (lar, rope). Beekes finds both these proposals unconvincing.

Pronunciation

Noun

λῶμᾰ (lôman (genitive λώμᾰτος); third declension

  1. hem, fringe, border of a robe
