Borrowed from Iranian.[1] Compare Middle Persian mwlwʾlyt' (morwārīd) (whence Persian مروارید (marvārīd)), Sogdian [script needed] (marγārt), Sanskrit मञ्जरी (mañjarī), and Avestan 𐬨𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬫𐬀 (mərəya).
