Ancient Greek
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Either:
- from ξένος (xénos, “foreigner; stranger”) + ἔλασις (élasis) + -ῐ́ᾱ (-íā, suffix forming feminine abstract nouns); or
- from ξενηλατεῖν (xenēlateîn, “to expel a foreigner”) + -ῐ́ᾱ (-íā) (suggested by the Oxford English Dictionary), with ξενηλατεῖν (xenēlateîn) derived from ξένος (xénos) + ἐλαύνω (elaúnō, “to drive, set in motion; to drive away”) + -ειν (-ein, suffix forming infinitives of verbs).
