Etymology[edit]

Of foreign origin, compare Sanskrit पुण्डरीक ‎(puṇḍárīka). See also πάρδαλις ‎(párdalis). A common folk etymology derives it from πᾶν "all, total" + θήρ "beast" or θήρα "hunt".
