Of foreign origin, compare Sanskrit पुण्डरीक (puṇḍárīka). See also πάρδαλις (párdalis). A common folk etymology derives it from πᾰν- (pan-, all) + θήρ (thḗr, beast) or θήρα (thḗra, hunt).
