[edit]From παν- (pan-, “everything”) + επιστήμη (epistími, “science”) + -ιο (-io, diminutive suffix) with influence from πανεπιστήμων (panepistímon, “all-knowing, omniscient, gifted in all sciences”), a calque of Medieval Latin universitas.
