Etymology

The word has been derived from πλατύς (platús, broad, flat), under the assumption that the tree was named after its broad leaves of flat patches of bark. According to Beekes, this etymology must be rejected in view of the opaque derivation of the oldest attested form πλατάνιστος (platánistos). Instead, it can be assumed that the name of this tree was borrowed from Lua error in Module:parameters at line 239: Parameter 2 should be a valid language, etymology language or family code; the value "pregrc" is not valid. See WT:LOL, WT:LOL/E and WT:LOF. and only secondarily became associated with πλατύς (platús).
