Etymology[edit]

From σεβάζομαι (sebázomai, to feel awe, revere) +‎ -τος (-tos, adjectival suffix): literally “worthy of being revered”. Compare σεπτός (septós, august), formed by adding the same suffix to σέβομαι (sébomai).
