Ancient Greek

Etymology

[edit]

A connection with σμηρίζω (smērízō, to plane, to polish) is implausible. Furnée, instead, convincingly compares the word with σπάρος (spáros, annular sea bream), suggesting a Pre-Greek origin.[1][2]
