From Byzantine Greek στάνη (stánē), from Proto-Slavic *stanъ (lodging) (compare Bulgarian стан (stan, camp), Serbo-Croatian ста̑н (apartment)). Also note Koine Greek βουστάνη (boustánē, ox byre).
