Etymology[edit]

This item formally agrees with Sanskrit स्तिया (stiyā, stagnant water), but the semantics are quite different. An intermediate meaning could be sought in Sanskrit स्त्यान (styāna, curdled, thick). Other possible cognates are Proto-Germanic *stainaz (stone) and Proto-Slavic *stěna (rock; lump).
