Ancient Greek[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Originally onomatopoeic. For the suffix, compare the bird names κόραξ (kórax, crow) and πέρδιξ (pérdix, partridge). Similar bird names are Lithuanian tetervà (grey hen), Proto-Slavic *tetervь (black grouse), Proto-Iranian *tatr̥wáh (pheasant) and Sanskrit तित्तिर (tittira, partridge). From the same onomatopoeic root are τετράων (tetráōn), τέτριξ (tétrix), τατύρας (tatúras), τέταρος (tétaros) and τετράζω (tetrázō).
