Etymology[edit]

Already attested in 1874[1] in analogy to επωνυμία f (eponymía).[2] Compound of τοπ- (τόπος) (top- (tópos), place) +‎ -ωνυμία (-onymía, -onym).[3]
According to Charalambakis, also the sense "toponymy", as a learned borrowing from English toponymy or French toponymie.[4]
