From Ottoman Turkish فندق(funduq), from Arabic فُنْدُق(funduq), from Middle Persian pndk' (pondik), shortened from Ancient Greek Ποντικόν κάρυον (Pontikón káruon), from Ποντικόν (Pontikón, of Pontus) (a region in Turkey) + κάρυον (káruon, nut).
