Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Ancient Greek *χαμαίφυτον (*khamaíphuton, literally “near the ground plant”), from χαμαί (khamaí, “near the ground”) + φυτόν (phutón, “plant”). For the semantics compare Russian земляни́ка (zemljaníka), Polish poziomka.
Note that Greek χαμαίφυτο (chamaífyto, “chamaephyte”) is a modern learned creation and thus not a real cognate.
