Etymology

From the plural χείλη of χείλος (cheílos) with a suffix -α > χείλια in analogy to plurals such as στήθη (stíthi) - στήθια (stíthia, breasts).[2]

Or from a medieval Byzantine Greek χείλιν or ἀχείλιν with resyllabizing the phrase ένα αχείλι (one lip) to ένα χείλι.[3]
