Greek

From the plural χείλη (cheíli) of χείλος (cheílos) with a suffix -α > χείλια (cheília) in analogy to plurals such as στήθη (stíthi) ~ στήθια (stíthia, “breasts”).^[2]

Or from a medieval Byzantine Greek χείλιν (kheílin) / ἀχείλιν (akheílin) with resyllabizing the phrase ἔν ἀχείλιν (én akheílin, “a lip”) to ἔνα χείλιν (éna kheílin), from a diminutive of Ancient Greek χεῖλος (kheîlos)^[3]
