Usage notes

• Learned use instead of the standard κότα (kóta), but also used in Demotic in several regions of Greece and in literature.
• The plural οι όρνιθες (órnithes) is feminine; the ancient form οἱ, αἱ ὄρνιθες (órnithes) can be either masculine or feminine. The comedy Όρνιθες (Órnithes) (Ὂρνιθες (Òrnithes)) by Aristophanes, is masculine.
