Etymology

From Bulgarian северен (severen, northern) and Korean 高麗 (Goryeo), the name of the predecessor state of modern North and South Korea, which unified the Three Korean Kingdoms Baekje, Silla (including the earlier Gaya confederacy), and Goguryeo (including much of earlier Balhae) in 918.
