Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Old Ruthenian Чорно́быль (Čornóbylʹ). From чорно́биль (čornóbylʹ, mugwort), from чо́рне (čórne, black, neuter of чо́рний (čórnyj)) + билля́ (bylljá, grass blades or stalks).
