From Proto-Slavic *ablъko (also *ablъkъ, *ablъka), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂eb-ōl-s, *h₂eb-l-o-. Cognate with Old High German apful, afful, Old Irish ubull (Irish úll), Old Norse epli (Swedish äpple), Latvian ābols, Lithuanian obuolys.
