Serbo-Croatian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Shortened form of аутомо̀бӣл.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /ǎuto/
  • Hyphenation: а‧у‧то

Noun[edit]

а̀уто m (Latin spelling àuto)

  1. car, automobile
    Synonym: кола
Не можеш да узмеш ауто, јер нема бензина.You can’t take the car, because there isn’t any gas.
    • 1989, Видосав Стевановић, Иницијали:
Цигарета беше горка као пепео. Седео сам у ауту (руке на волану, глава на рукама) и ослушкивао кишу – вечан, једноличан и увек нов шум, дирљиво досадан и мени необично, тужно узбудљив; ромињала је шапућући као старица која плаче на туђем гробу.
The cigarette was as bitter as ash. I sat in the car (hands on the steering wheel, head on my hands) and listened to the rain - eternal, monotonous and always new noise, touchingly boring and strangely, sadly exciting for me; she whispered like an old woman crying at someone else's grave.

Note: In Serbia auto/ауто as neuter ("плаво ауто" instead of "плави ауто") can occur, but it is substandard.
