From Proto-Nakh *bɦorc̣, from Proto-Northeast Caucasian *bħĕrc̣ĭ(ĕ) (wolf), hypothetically from Proto-North Caucasian *bħĕrc̣ĭ(ĕ) (wolf, jackal), from Proto-North Caucasian *bHV̆rgĂ (a beast of prey, predator); possibly related to Proto-Northwest Caucasian *bˁaga (jackal, fox). Cognate with Ingush борз (borz), Bats ბჺორწ (bʿorc̣), Avar бацӏ (bac̣), Lak барцӏ (barc̣), Bezhta бацӏ.
