Etymology

Old Russian гыря, Bulgarian гiря. Vasmer connects it to the root of гвор (gvor) "bladder, tumor", ultimately PIE *gʷreh₂- "heavy". The phonology is difficult and may show Iranian influence (Indo-Iranian *gr̥Húš, modern Persian گران (gerân) "heavy").
