Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Proto-Slavic *dьly (v-stem). Either of substrate origin, akin to Latin dōlium (cask), or derived from unattested Proto-Slavic *dеlti ~ *dьlǫ (to carve) +‎ -ва (-va), akin to Bulgarian дълба́я (dǎlbája, to delve, to scoop), дола (dola, lot) (dialectal).
