Etymology[edit]
Inherited from Proto-Slavic *dьly (v-stem). Either of substrate origin, akin to Latin dōlium (“cask”), or derived from unattested Proto-Slavic *dеlti ~ *dьlǫ (“to carve”) + -ва (-va), akin to Bulgarian дълба́я (dǎlbája, “to delve, to scoop”), дола (dola, “lot”) (dialectal).
