Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Slavic *divъ, probably from Proto-Balto-Slavic *deiwas, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *deywós ‎(god), with the alternate sense of "demon" probably taken from an Iranian language (compare Persian دیو ‎(div)), ultimately of the same source. Compare диво ‎(divo).
