Etymology[edit]

A paired term, where the first component derives from Proto-Turkic *em (medicine, cure), and the second from a Mongolic source (compare Mongolian дом (dom, spell, folk medicine)), from Proto-Mongolic *dom (spell, divination).

Compare to Kazakh ем-дом (em-dom, traditional healing practices), Southern Altai эм-том (em-tom, medicine), Turkmen em-dem (traditional healing practices), Khakas им-том (im-tom, medicine), Tuvan эм-таң (em-tañ, medicine).
