Borrowed from Greek κέφαλος (kéfalos, mullet; gray mullet), from Ancient Greek κέφᾰλος (képhalos, grey mullet), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *gʰébʰōl (head).

Cognates include Turkish kefal, Russian кефа́ль (kefálʹ), Albanian qefull and Romanian chefal.
