From Proto-Slavic *ključь, from Proto-Indo-European *kleh₂u- ‎(nail, pin, hook - instruments, of old use for locking doors). Cognate with Ancient Greek κλείς ‎(kleís, key) and Latin clāvus ‎(nail).
