Etymology[edit]

Simplified from an earlier карчи́чек (karčíček), borrowed from dialectal Ottoman Turkish كارچیچیك (karçiçek, snow flower). Possibly influenced by Greek κόκκος (kókkos, speck, grain), whence dialectal Bulgarian коки́чка (kokíčka, kernel).
