Etymology[edit]
From German Kappus (“cabbage”), with the first -у- coming by merger with another word with the same meaning. Compare dialectal Serbo-Croatian капуц, капус (from Venetian capuzzo), and also Old Serbo-Croatian (Kajkavian) kupust (ultimately from Latin composita (“mixed”).
