[edit]Borrowed from German Kappus (“cabbage”), with the first -u- coming by merger with another word with the same meaning. Compare dialectal Serbo-Croatian kapuc, kapus (from Venetan capuzzo), and also Old Serbo-Croatian (Kajkavian) kupust (ultimately from Latin composita (“mixed”). First attested in the 16th century.
