Etymology[edit]

From *kӧgärčin "dove, pigeon", from Proto-Turkic *kȫkärčin (dove, pigeon), derived via suffixation from the verb stem *kȫkär- "to be blue", from Proto-Turkic *kȫk (blue).

Immediately cognate with Tatar күгәрчен (küğärçen), Kazakh көгершін (kögerşin), Crimean Tatar kögerçin, gögercin, Turkmen göğerçin, Turkish güvercin, Azeri göyərçin (pigeon); Tuvan көгээзин (kögääzïn, wild pigeon), etc.

Note that Old Turkic [script needed] (kögürčgen), Old Turkic [script needed] (kögürčgün, pigeon), Kyrgyz көгүчкөн (kögüçkön), көгүрчкөн (kögürçkön, pigeon) come from an distinct alternative form *kögürč-gen "pigeon".
