Etymology
[edit]Probably from Кꙑи (Kyi, “Kyi”) + -ꙗнинъ (-janinŭ) with the original meaning “Kyi's people”, with a further transition to “residents of Kyiv”. First attested in the late 1420s. It was borrowed into Old Novgorodian кꙑꙗнине (kyjanine), where it was first attested around 1180–1200.
