Etymology[edit]

From мэлэкӏэн (mɛlɛkʼɛn, to be hungry) +‎ лӏэн (lˢʼɛn, to die); hence literally “to starve to death”. Many Circassians use this verb to describe hungry instead of мэлэкӏэн.
