Etymology[edit]
Uncertain. BER tentatively draws comparison with Serbo-Croatian рапа (“mudminnow”), without suggesting any certain kinship.
By surface analysis, ора́ (orá, “to furrow, to plough”) + -оп (-op), possibly implying resemblance to something spiky or pointy.
