From Proto-Slavic *plesti, cognate with Serbo-Croatian плести/plesti, Slovene plesti, Russian плести (plesti), Slovak pliesť. Non-Slavic cognates include German flechten, Latin plectō, Ancient Greek πλέκω (plékō, to plait).
