Russian

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): [pəɪˈtɛs(ː)ə] (phonetic respelling: поэтэ́сса)
  • (emphatic) IPA(key): [poɪˈtɛs(ː)ə]

Noun

поэте́сса (poetɛ́ssaf anim (genitive поэте́ссы, nominative plural поэте́ссы, genitive plural поэте́сс, masculine поэ́т)

  1. poetess, woman poet

Usage notes

Sometimes interpreted as not quite equal to the masculine поэ́т (poét). Several famous female Russian poets, notably Anna Akhmatova and Marina Tsvetaeva, insisted on being called поэ́т (poét), and regarded the term поэте́сса (poetɛ́ssa) as insulting.
