Inherited from Old Ruthenian *провидѣнье (*providěnʹje), possibly from Old Church Slavonic провидѣниѥ, провѣдѣниѥ (providěnije, prověděnije). By surface analysis, прови́діти (provýdity) +‎ -ння (-nnja).
