Etymology

Per Vasmer, formed like разгуля́й (razguljáj, fun place), растрепа́й (rastrepáj, ragamuffin), etc.; possibly based in гиль (gilʹ, confusion). Per Trubachev, however, quoting Popov, derived from Tatar уразгильды (urazgil’dı), уразгильдей (urazgil’dey), also разгильдей (razgil’dey), разгильдяй (razgil’dyay).
