[edit]Coined during the 19th century during attempts to achieve independence from Tsarist Russian rule. The earliest known usage of this phrase was from a poem written by Taras Shevchenko, in the poem "До Основ'яненка" (To Osnovianenko) in 1840.

Usage notes
[edit]In an extended form, the salute consists of "Слава Україні, героям слава, слава нації, смерть ворогам" (Glory to Ukraine, glory to heroes, glory to the [Ukrainian] nation, death to [our] enemies).
