[edit]Several hypotheses have been proposed:
- From со́пам се (sópam se, “to snap”) + -ол (-ol);
- From Proto-Indo-European *sap- (“mucus”), whence Latin sapa (“wine must”);
- From the root of си́пвам (sípvam, “to pour”), сип (sip, “embankment”), пря́спа (prjáspa, “snow drift”) (per Mladenov).
