Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Proto-Slavic *sьrxъ. Cognate with Slovene srh (shiver) and the Bulgarian verb настръхна (nastrǎhna, bristle up (hair)). Further related to Middle High German hurst (shrubbery), whence German Horst (thicket, small forest).
