Etymology

From Proto-Slavic *sy, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁sónts, present active participle of the copula съм (sǎm, “to be”). Cognate with Sanskrit सत् (sat), Old English sōþ (whence English sooth).

2. emphatic affirmation of the subject
