Etymology

Borrowed from a non-Kipchak Turkic language, ultimately from Proto-Turkic *sïgïr (cow). Doublet of сиыр (siyr), which is inherited. Cognate with Old Turkic [script needed] (sïγïr, cow), Bashkir һыйыр (hıyır), Tatar сыер (sıyer), Nogai сыйыр (sıyır), Uzbek sigir, Turkmen sygyr, Turkish sığır, etc.
