Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Mordvinic *śulə, inherited from Proto-Finno-Ugric *śale (gut, intestine). Cognate with Finnish suoli, Veps sol', Ter Sami чыэлле, Eastern Mari шоло (šolo), Udmurt сюл (śul).
