From Proto-Turkic *teriŋ. Cognate with Kazakh терең (tereñ), Kyrgyz терең (tereŋ), Crimean Tatar teren, Karachay-Balkar терен (teren), Kumyk терен (teren), Bashkir тәрән (tərən), Tatar тирән (tirän), Azerbaijani dərin, Turkish derin, Shor терең, etc.
