Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Tatar тилмач (tilmaç), ultimately from Proto-Turkic *tilmač. Compare чӗлхе (čĕlh̬e), from the same root. Cognate with Azerbaijani dilmanc , Kazakh тілмаш (tılmaş), Kyrgyz тилмеч (tilmec), Pecheneg tilmaç, Uzbek tilmoch, Turkish dilmaç etc.
