[edit]From Proto-Turkic *ulug (“big, great”). Cognate with Karachay-Balkar уллу (ullu), Kyrgyz улуу (uluu), Tatar олы (olı), Khakas улуғ (uluğ), Shor улуғ, Western Yugur uluğ, Kumyk уллу (ullu), Karaim ulu, Turkmen uly, Turkish ulu (“great”).
