From Proto-Turkic *ulug (big, great). Cognate with Karachay-Balkar уллу (ullu), Kyrgyz улуу (uluu), Tatar олы (olı), Khakas улуғ (uluğ), Shor улуғ, Western Yugur uluğ, Kumyk уллу (ullu), Karaim ulu, Turkmen uly, Turkish ulu (great).
